A Brief History of MASA
MASA was established in 1975 and was the precursor to the present day Academic Staff Assembly governance structure. Since then, the organization has evolved.
As a professional association, MASA promotes the professional status of academic staff through communication, programs, and networking, activities that are complementary to governance. MASA’s independent structure still allows the association to be the “eyes and ears” of academic staff on campus, upholding its long tradition of advocacy.
Throughout its history, MASA has accomplished much that directly benefits academic staff:
- Took the lead in getting governance legislation approved for academic staff.
- Joined with other campus groups to provide initial funding for an academic staff lobbyist, which evolved into the Academic Staff Professionals Representation Organization (ASPRO).
- Produced several documents outlining critical issues facing the campus.
- Provided historical background for the UW-Madison vision effort.
